HADIA National Interventions

HADIA Moral School is a village-level primary spiritual learning center aimed at imparting basic religious knowledge, excellent moral characters and lessons of responsible citizenship to each and every boy and girl in Muslim community across the country. HADIA Moral School has developed a systematic method to provide religious knowledge and awareness in a way that supports and encourages the modern secular schooling of any child. It has developed a well-defined curriculum and syllabus, text-books, several teacher training programs, exams , continuous evaluation methods and parenting sessions. HADIA Moral School is an initiative by HADIA Centre for Social Excellence, a multi-faceted alumni project of Darul Huda Islamic University, Kerala.

HADIA Moral School: aims and objectives

  1. 1. To set up an excellent system of basic Islamic learning in all villages and localities with a notable Muslim population
  2. 2. To ensure that each and every Muslim boy or girl in the country gets a primary understanding of their religion, its beliefs and practices
  3. 3. To ensure that all Moral School students get attractive textbooks prepared considering their psychological levels and employing modern learning methods
  4. 4. To set up model Moral Schools that will have all features of primary schools like separate classrooms and teachers, prescribed curriculum and syllabus, exams and other evaluation methods, extra-curricular activities and competitions, teaching tools and others
  5. 5. To provide the basic learning of Islam in their own regional languages.
  6. 6. To nurture qualified and trained teachers who can teach at primary religious learning centers employing modern teaching techniques and practices.
  7. 7. To utilize the Moral School buildings in the locality as Human Resource Development centre that can lead all developmental activities of that area, and work as a mediator that can help various government agencies to reach its schemes to grassroots level.
  8. 8. To ensure that every student in the Moral School attends regular schooling, and is encouraged to pursue higher education based on talents and aptitude
  9. 9. To ensure that every Muslim living in the country gets a faith-based inspiration to participate in nation-building, delivers responsible citizenship and active social life.


1. What do at HADIA Moral Schools?

We transform and modernize the existing Maktab education system in India

2. What do to develop the Maktabs?

  • ❖ Linking every village in 15 kilometres radius with a Range System
  • ❖ Providing colourful textbooks for - Qur’an, Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), Akhlaq (Moral Values), Aqeeda (Beliefes), Thareekh (Islamic History)
  • ❖ Separate and child-friendly textbooks for each subject
  • ❖ Systematic Training programs for Maktab teachers in teaching and learning methods
  • ❖ Proper inspection and monitoring system
  • ❖ Focus on classroom teaching, basic teaching tools like blackboard facilities like bench and Desk and amenities
  • ❖ Standardization through time table, period, exams, multiple teachers, etc.
  • ❖ Provision to ensure that each Maktab-attending child attends regular schooling, as HADIA Maktab do not teach any school subjects, rather it promote and encourage regular public schooling
  • ❖ Monthly teachers’ gathering for mock teaching drills and discussion on syllabus
  • ❖ Art fest to tap and nurture talents.

3. When the system was started?

The HADIA Moral School started in 2011 in Andhra Pradesh. Initially HADIA appointed two Hudawi Field Workers who travelled through 150 villages in Andhra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and found out 25 villages with facilities and teachers who can teach the syllabus prepared by HADIA. The books were distributed free of cost and teachers were handed a small amount as remuneration.The idea was to station in the Darul Huda campus in the state and work in the villages approachable from there. The same system was gradually implemented in West Bengal and Assam where Darul Huda has its own campuses.

  9. learning Urdu language in the primary class. The syllabus is now available in Bengali and Assamese languages as well.

7. Grading system

Our inspector visits every Moral School bimonthly and inspects the performance of students in each class. His main concerns are cleanliness of students’ dress, body and study materials, their knowledge of text book contents, memorization of surahs and azkar etc. There are 4 grades namely developed, developing, under developed, degradable. HADIA provides cash awards in Monthly Range meetings for developed Moral Schools after each inspection period.

8. Conditions of Starring

By considering the infrastructure facilities and involvement of villagers in Moral Schools, HADIA stars them from one to five.

9. Is there any provision to engage with parents?

Yes, (1) Parent As Teacher Programme is held monthly. The class teacher will gather all parents and conduct a class on upcoming chapters of text books. (2) There is Parent Teacher Association in order to let them involve in infrastructure and academic development of Moral School.

10. Do you pay the salaries of the Maktab teachers?

No, but we give awards for best performance after our inspector’s visit and analysis of Maktabs.

11. Do you provide any financial help to maktabs?

Not as a part of our system. But if any well wisher expresses his interest to donate towards the infrastructure or building of Moral Schools, we connect him to needy villagers. Also HADIA arranges grants to Maktabs, giving its share the infrastructure of Makthab, If it was selected for its effective response to HADIA systems by scoring stars etc.

13. What is a Maktab?

Maktab is primary religious learning centre meant to provide basic and compulsory Islamic teaching to each and every person living in a village populated by the Muslim community. This is widely seen across India except Kerala.

14. Why Maktab needs transformation?

Maktab has been ineffective, follow the outdated one to one teaching system. No proper syllabus and textbooks given. Teachers are not trained or even knowledgeable. Very limited number of students attend maktabs, and even after spending years at Maktab a student learns very little or nothing. Monitoring under proper committee is not done. Mostly attending maktab does not help the student to achieve the intended goals. Majority of Maktab students do not attend regular schooling. Instead, they are provided with nominal school subjects at Maktab

15. What are the features of HADIA (Maktab) Moral School?

5-year course with good syllabus and textbooks, extendable to 7 year and then to 10 year syllabus

HR = Chief Operating Officer - Department Heads - Program Managers – Academic Coordinators – Trainers – Range Coordinators – Teachers.

18. How one can Affiliate to HMS?

HADIA’s Regional Project coordinator visits the villages, convinces them about the need to develop their current Maktab, forms a local committee there, rearranges present seating of students, conducts test among students to divide them in to classes, provides admission register, attendance register, text books, progress card, etc.

19. What are the subjects and textbooks taught?

The curriculum and syllabus of the HADIA Moral School has been designed in a simple method aimed at imparting preliminary compulsory knowledge on Islamic beliefs and practices to boys and girls. It provides lessons and practical experiences on Quran recitation (Nazira), Principles of Quran Recitation (Tajweed), Traditions of the Prophet, (Hadees), Jurisprudence (Fiqh), Islamic Histoy (Tareekh), Science of Beliefes( Aqeeda), Science of Character Building(Akhlaq). The basic texts being prepared in Urdu, the common language of Muslims in Indian sub-continent, with a curriculum which gives extra focus on

20. How do you engage with the Management?

In most of the villages, we couldn’t find a regular management for Maktabs. As a first step, our Coordinator forms a committee there and trains them on institution management. They are key responsibile persons of Moral school in their village, and they conduct programs like art fest, Qur’an literacy Program, Class inaugural ceremony etc.

21. Can you explain the teacher training process adopted by HMS?

(1) Pre-service orientation, (2) One-day workshops on Teaching and learning methods, (3) monthly Range wise gathering to discuss lesson plans and conduct model class

22. Why do you still bother with empowering Maktabs?

There are several efforts aimed at development and progress of India’s Muslim community, the backwardness of which in all fields of human development has been the focus of several recent studies, including the Sachaar Committee report of 2006, and a 2017 study by Maulana Azad Education Foundation (MAEF) funded by the Central Minority Ministry under NDA. All these studies point out lack of modern education from primary to higher levels in the community. At the same time, there is a general perception that there are thousands of religious education institutions across the country to spread religious knowledge. However, frequent field studies by Darul Huda and HADIA has shed light on the conspicuous absence of basic religious awareness and qualified primary education system in the society. Evaluating the core causes of Muslim backwardness in India, HADIA, the Darul Huda Alumni, assessed that in order to inspire higher education and all other developmental activities among Muslims, as a religious community, they should be provided with a better understanding of their religion, its basic beliefs and practices. Qualified religious learning also includes faith-based motivation on dignified and responsible citizenship that will encourage them to look positively towards all kinds of social development.

23. Which age-group is targeted by the HADIA?

Boys and girls of age 5 and above.

24. Is there any provision under HADIA to teach quran and basic Islam to elders?

Yes, HADIA prepare study materials of basic Aqeeda and Fiqh especially for elders.

25. Are the activities of HADIA limited to running/transforming Maktab?

No, HADIA have some other projects like Model village project, Model Panjayat Project and Model District Project.
